Why You Can’t “Catch Up” on Sleep in One Weekend | Insights from a Bloor West Acupuncturist
You know the drill.
Monday to Friday, you're running on coffee, meetings, errands and approximately six hours of sleep.
Then Friday night rolls around and you think, Finally. I can sleep.
So you sleep until 10am Saturday. Maybe 11. You take a Sunday afternoon nap for good measure and convince yourself you've officially paid back your sleep debt.
Unfortunately, your body doesn't quite work like a bank account.
You can't completely erase a week of poor sleep with one glorious weekend in bed. And if you're constantly relying on Saturday and Sunday to recover from the week before, your body might be telling you that it needs more than just extra hours under the duvet.
So… why can’t you just sleep it off?
Your body has an internal clock—your circadian rhythm—that helps regulate when you feel awake and when it's time to sleep.
So when you run on six hours all week and then sleep until 11am on Saturday, your body is essentially working two different schedules.
Monday–Friday: “Wake up! We have things to do!”
Saturday: “Actually, never mind. See you at 11.”
And then there's stress. You can be completely exhausted and still have a brain that refuses to clock out. Your laptop is closed, the lights are off, you're in bed—and suddenly your brain wants to replay that awkward conversation from 2019. Very relaxing…
This is where acupuncture can come into the conversation. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, sleep is closely connected to the balance of Yin and Yang and the settling of the Shen, or “mind/spirit.” When your body is having trouble shifting from daytime activity into nighttime rest, acupuncture aims to address the underlying pattern rather than simply making you sleepy.
So if you're thinking, “I'm exhausted, but I just can't switch off,” your sleep may be telling us more than you think.
So how does acupuncture fit into your sleep routine?
Acupuncture isn't a sleeping pill—and we're not promising that you'll suddenly sleep for 12 hours after one appointment.
Instead, we look at the bigger picture.
Your sleep might be affected by stress, muscle tension, headaches, digestive issues, hormonal changes, your daily routine or a combination of several things. That's why acupuncture treatments are personalized.
During an appointment, our Registered Acupuncturist will ask about things like:
How easily you fall asleep
Whether you wake during the night
What time you tend to wake up
Whether you wake feeling rested
Your stress levels
Your energy throughout the day
Digestion
Your menstrual cycle, when relevant
Muscle tension and pain
Basically, we're not just asking, “Did you sleep?”
We're asking “What does your sleep actually look like?”
Because waking up once at 3am is a very different sleep story from lying awake for two hours every night.
And yes, your acupuncture treatment might make you sleepy
One of the reasons people love acupuncture is that they often leave feeling deeply relaxed.
Acupuncture can influence the nervous system and promote a shift toward the parasympathetic, or “rest and digest,” state. Some people feel calm and grounded after treatment. Others get that “I could absolutely take a nap right now” feeling.
And honestly, we'll take that as a good sign that your body is finally getting the memo.
Your sleep deserves more than a Sunday nap
Good sleep isn't just about feeling less tired. It's when your body gets the opportunity to recover, regulate and recharge for everything you're asking it to do during the day. At The Holistic Refinery in Bloor West Village, acupuncture can be part of a personalized holistic approach to supporting stress, sleep and overall nervous system health. Because your body shouldn't have to spend Monday recovering from the week before. And your Saturday morning deserves better than being your only chance to catch up.
